To be exact, it also affects how much of borders are visible, but
the default values for "Max zoomed" and the values I expect users
to use for that should be so large that ST resolution is always doubled
with full borders.

(The other mail mentions issues ST/STE video mode code would have
if keep resolution would be enabled for them + patch for testing it.)
