Maybe nobody has filed a bug about that to SDL bug tracker so that
SDL developers would know?

Likewise.  Only problems I've had have been with programs using OpenGL
when they crash and leave gfx HW into some broken state.  Sometimes
even restarting X doesn't help for that.

Exactly.

On Linux the SDL backend does what was earlier only available alternative to
get fast fullscreen, but AFAIK nowadays there are better ways to do things
with X that what SDL is still doing.  I.e. the issue on Linux is a bit of
a legacy issue.  Maybe they want to be compatible to obsolete X versions,
or maybe this is already fixed/improved in the SDL trunk (I haven't
checked).
