In case you have more ideas you'd like to commit for others to do some
tests, I think one way to do it could be to create a "gui-sdl-new"
directory for example and duplicate all code + changes in it.
This would limit the number of #ifdef in others parts of the code and
would just need a few changes to cmakefile to choose which sdl gui to
compile.
(another way could be to create a new branch in mercurial, but it could be
a little more complicated to have actives branches in the repository)
