Verified that what you said works for me and commited a major update to
manual hard disk sections.

Do you see any possible downsides from removing that?  At least everything
seems to be working fine with IDE without this, TOS finds the drives etc.

E.g. stMemory.c ConnectedDriveMask uses emudrives array directly so
I think I can safely remove anything related to nPartitions and nNumDrives
variables.
